Using Flockboss With a Class Field Trip
This is one of many ways you can use Flockboss.com to share birdwatching experiences with classmates:
Ms. Finch’s class at Flicker Elementary is planning a field trip to the nearby ‘Ucello Nature Preserve’ to look for birds. Each of the kids has chosen a target bird to look for on the field trip. As part of the preparation for the trip, Ms. Finch has had each of the students join Flockboss and make a member id based on her/his target bird name. Ms. Finch creates a flock named ‘finchflock’ with all the students’ id’s in it. Before the trip, Ms. Finch gives the students the following assignment:
PRE-CLASS ASSIGNMENT for Ms. Finch’s 4th Grade Class
- Log in to Flockboss.com
- On the View Trip Reports page, list all the trips that have been reported at Ucello Nature Preserve in the past month and answer these questions:
- Did anyone report your target bird? When was the first and last report date?
- How many species have been reported at Ucello Nature Preserve in the past month?
After the field trip, the students get the following assignment:

- Log in to Flockboss.com
- Make a new trip report listing the birds you found on the trip.
- In the comments field, note whether you saw your target bird. Also list 3 interesting things you saw on the trip. Report any other observations you want to report.
HANDOUTS
- Before the trip: Display Step-by-step help under the How to Flockboss menu and print it using your browser’s print command.
- After the trip: Print out the bird list for the class flock, ‘finchflock’ for the day of the outing.
- Log in to Flockboss.com
- Click the Flocks & Member Info/Lists link at the top of the page.
- In the Flocks I own or share list, click the ‘finchflock’ entry. This displays the Flock Details page.
- On the Flock Details page, set the start and end date above the Flock Bird List to the day of the trip, and click the ‘Update list’ button.
- Print the page using your browser’s print command.
